Tips For A Healthy Home
-
Be sure to use cleaning products that are Certified EcoLogo.
-
Dust frequently with a damp cloth to eliminate dust.
-
Open windows and doors regularly to air out your home.
-
To improve the quality of the air, the Montreal Botanical Gardens recommends the use of depolluting plants such as: Aglaonema, aloe, dracaena, ficus, ivy, philodendron, spider plant, pothos, sansevieria, schefflera, peace lilies.
-
Vacuum using a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter.
-
Wash your sheets regularly. Especially the duvet, duvet cover or bedspread.
-
Do not clutter.
-
Place a washable floor mat at the entrance of your home and be sure to take off your shoes at the door.
-
Isolate the door from the garage into your home as you would a door leading outside.
-
Ensure that the air vent of your home is not linked to the garage.
-
Avoid air fresheners, as their sole purpose is to mask unpleasant odors. When it comes to essential oils, use them with precaution, as they can be very strong and invasive, especially for those with much sensitivity.
-
Do not smoke in the home.
-
Inspect and clean your fireplace and/or wood-burning stove every year.
-
Install a carbon monoxide detector if you have a fireplace or a wood heating system.
-
Use a hygrometer to measure the humidity in your home. In the winter, it should be at 30% or less. In the summer, a rate of 55% is acceptable. The colder it gets outdoors, the more the percentage should be reduced. A reasonable humidity is 35% for a temperature of 22° C.
-
Install a dehumidifier in the basement and allow it to run continuously from spring to fall. The level of moisture should be adjusted between 30%-40%.
-
In the winter, the ideal temperature in your home is between 20-21°C. If you go away and are absent for a long period of time, lower the thermostat but never less than 18°C.
-
Make sure that the ventilator in the bathroom works properly and left running long enough (a few hours if needed) to remove any moisture after showering or bathing.
